1st Gig 2006 - LIVE BAND SPECIAL

After taken a break for one and a half year, the Tom Lee Music Carnival re-launched on January 22, 2006 at the Piazza Area C of Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Tsimshatsui. As the first gig of 2006, the live band performance was extended to four hours and specially named as “Live Band Special”. Ten outstanding local bands were invited to showcase their talents in the kick-off show to explode their music power and fantastic live band sound at the Harbourfront. Eight of them were the representatives from “Yamaha Asian Beat Band Competition” and “SoundBase Festival 2005”, which organized by Tom Lee Music, plus the two guest bands “Tai Tau Fat” and “Dear Jane”.

Although it was cold on that day, the enthusiasm and passion of performers kept high and attracted the attention of hundreds of music lovers and supporters. The “Live Band Special” was kicked off by the strong rhythms from “Haze”. The guitarist, Jason won the “Best Guitarist” of Yamaha Asian Beat 2005 Hong Kong Final. His fingers ran smoothly over the strings though they were numbed with cold. The audiences were astonished by his amazing techniques and the band’s excellent performance.

Musical talents should be related to heredity. Brothers formed many famous bands in the world. And there were four participating bands in the “Live Band Special” composed of brothers, including “B2B”, “Infinity”, “Nuclear” and “Ever”. They had unspoken consensus during performances and won the big applauses from audiences.

Wong’s brothers, Karl and Shawn formed “B2B” years ago and the group then became a 4-men full band. The two youngsters were experienced in open performance and had won many awards. Karl was the “Best Keyboard Player” of the Yamaha Asian Beat 2005 Hong Kong Final. On that day, they played several original compositions like “The Day After” which is about the tsunami in South Asia.

“Ever”, the Champion of “Yamaha Asian Beat 2002” delivered an incredible performance though the vocalist and guitarist, Ka Ho was sick. Marco of the band “Tai Tau Fat” was also invited to jam as the guest drummer on the day. And audiences sang together with the band and showed their appreciation with applause.

The Champion and winners of the four individual prizes of Yamaha Asian Beat 2004 Hong Kong Final as well as three big awards of Asia Grand Final held in Jakarta, Indonesia in February 2005, “Infinity” was invited as one of the performers in the “Live Band Special”. The audiences’clapping and shouts were won as a return to their wonderful instrumental music and techniques.

Also the new Champion of Yamaha Asian Beat 2005 Hong Kong Final, “Nuclear” performed their proficient skills together with their impressive stage presence, made the audience’s mood high too.

In addition to rock and punk music, there were various music styles in the band marathon. The two representatives from SoundBase Festival 2005, “Natural City” and “B&J” brought acoustic music to the show and the funk jazz group “Rescue Squad” performed with wind instruments to enrich their band sound. The audiences were intoxicated in the captivating and vibrant tunes.

“Natural City” was the youngest performers of the “Live Band Special”. The vocalist and guitarist, Jonathon is only fifteen-years-old while his Japanese partner, Kazuhiro is eighteen. Although the duo group just formed one year, they won the Gold Prize and their composition “Needing You” were also awarded the “CASH - Best Original Song Award” in the SoundBase Festival 2005. Their euphonious voices, acoustic guitar and keyboard sounds created a relaxed mood for the audiences.

The performance of the two guest bands “Tai Tau Fat” and “Dear Jane” pushed the atmosphere to the highest points. Applause and shouts could be heard around the Piazza. Marco, the drummer of “Tai Tau Fat” is one of the Zildjian endorsers in Hong Kong starting from 2004. The audiences screamed for his marvelous drumming skills.

The finale show time was going to “Dear Jane”. All audiences stood up under their instructions to sing and dance together with them. After that, the unforgettable four-hour “Live Band Special” ended at the moment in full of clapping of the audiences.

By bringing the world of music and happiness to public, the Tom Lee Music Carnival will be held once a month at the Piazza of Hong Kong Cultural Centre at Tsimshatsui Harbourfront. Besides live band performances, the energetic and powerful interactive Drum Circles will re-start in the Carnival from March 2006 to play African drums and enjoy music with everybody. Come and join us!
