To arouse the public interest towards music, Tom Lee Music Foundation has organized the "Tom Lee Music Carnival". This activity is also a part of the "Hong Kong Cultural Centre - Arts and Crafts Fair". Starting from May onwards, the Music Carnival will be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza on the last Sunday of each month with drum circle, live band, children programmes and various music perfomances. All are welcome to join the marvelous show, which is free of charge.
As a special function for the Easter holiday, a prologue "Tom Lee Music Carnival - Easter Special" was held on March 31. A great amount of audiences were attracted by our interactive activities and live performances.
The opening was the group drumming activity "Drum Circle" playing on Africian Djembe drums and percussions. Kumi Masunaga, a professional drum circle facilitator as well as the tutor of Tom Lee Music's Djembe Drum Workshop, was invited to lead the event. Many of the audiences showed great interest in joining us. Participants with no restriction on age and sex have devoted themselves to the drum music under the leadership of Kumi. In fact, group drumming is easily to handle by all ages and music levels. Also it could help people to release stress. Though many of the participants did not have experience in playing music, they could co-operate perfectly to perform a good show. Our music not only attracted local residents, many visiting tourists were also very interested in playing with us. This really proved that music is a universal language. Through their smiles, we knew that they had shared a good time with us.
Then it came the Electone performance by Zadia Kwong, the winner of the Yamaha Electone Festival 2001
open section. She has performed three pieces including "Tequila" and "Enter of Dragon". Her skilful technique and the rhythmic music have won great support from the audiences. They strongly clapped their hands and cheered to show their amusements.
After Zadia's impressive performance, then turned to another live programme -
performance by the winners of "Yamaha Wind Instrument Karaoke Contest 2002" (Champion - Wesley Cheng, 1st runner-up - Danny Chiu, 2nd runner-up - Miriam Tsui). Their performance by trumpet and saxophones showcased a great variety in music types including classical, jazz, even pop music and music styles. All the audiences enjoyed the relaxed mood created by the performers. Audiences also showed their appreciation by their applause.
Following the wind instrumental karaoke, we had the last part of the Carnival with live band performance. Show started by the new group formed by the members of the "SoundBase Festival 2001" and "Asian Beat" band competitions' winners. Many passers-by were staying and dedicated themselves to the performance, applause could be heard around the Piazza.
"BOXX" was the last performing group of the day, which is formed by three local youngsters who are active, outgoing and have great passion towards music. They had released their first album in Taiwan in 1999, and had gained wide popularity among those teenagers and young executives. They had also prepared to release their new album in Hong Kong in mid-April. Their musical talents and techniques have attracted the attention of the audiences. We could even hear audiences clapping their hands following the rhythms.
Not only were those youngsters being attracted, audiences from all walks of life enjoyed the Carnival very much.
