2002 Summer Special

The Tom Lee Music Carnival - Summer Special was held on 25th August, 2002 afternoon. The programmes are tailor-made for the whole family and all music lovers. Despite of the hot weather, more than five hundreds audience joined the carnival and enjoyed themselves.

The Drum Circle guided by the facilitator Kumi Masunaga and live band performance were held as usual at the Piazza, Hong Kong Cultural Centre with the line-up of the month : Livaboard, Fruitpunch, SooN, ~hyPnoTist~ and Bila Restaurant. The children music programmes, piano trio performance and various other music performances were held at the Foyer simultaneously.

The Yamaha Junior Music Course students started the show. Their sweet voice and lovely facial expressions burst the audience into laughter. After that, there was the violin performance. Although all performers are only primary school's students, they played as well as professionals. The Vocal Ensemble Group, consisting of twenty children also had an incredible performance. Their beautiful voice not only drew the attention of all audience, and also their lovely dressing attracted the focus of all cameras.

After the children music performance was the digital piano performance. The Club Keyboard instructors played several popular songs and demonstrated how to use the functions of the Yamaha Clavinova digital piano.

The last performer was the Trio d'Arbutus from Canada as the highlight of the Carnival. Their piano trio performance, which meant 1 piano 6 hands, was amazing and caused audience to stop breathing.

Trio d'Arbutus is composed of 3 Chinese young ladies from Vancouver. They are Patty Lin, Joyce Chan and Cindy Tsai. The Trio won the 2nd Prize of the "International Competition - Trio Group" in Marktoberdorf, Germany in May 2002.

Although there were six hands running on one piano, the sound was harmonious. What were the main keys of success? "Togetherness is of utmost importance. We have to breathe together.", Joyce said. To achieve unison and harmony, practice was needed since everyone's touch on the piano was different. For this performance, they had poured a lot of effort and prepared to practice together more than ten hours on the day before.

You may have a question - how to prevent the thirty fingers from crashing when running on the same piano? "It was a team work, we only could work out with cooperation such as one's hands should be higher, and the other's should be lower.", Patty said. Overall, team spirit and co-operation is very important.

They claimed that trio performance was totally different from individual performance. "As you can have your own expressions when playing individually. For trio performance, you have to compromise with others. Of course, some inconsistent opinions were happened, then we need to discuss and deeply consider on the whole way of presentation." Patty said.

In general, they were satisfied with their own performance and feedback in the Carnival. "The audience gave us a good response. They were curious about trio performance as it seems not so popular in Hong Kong.", Cindy said. Trio d'Arbutus played several classical pieces and their excellent performance got a big hand from all audience with encore requests.

For those who missed this wonderful Carnival, don't be disappointed.
